Asked to design for the maximum amount of space possible within the volume defined by the site and local building codes, the new New Museum fits the envelope without following it. The staggering and scaling of floors conforms to required setbacks and creates spatial variation. Column-free spaces accommodate art of many scales and give curators maximum flexibility with installations on the three exhibition floors. The façade, covered in a perforated metal screen, retains some of the gritty character of the surrounding neighborhood while projecting a sophisticated, contemporary identity for the New Museum.
