| This building and its surrounding landscape draw attention to the recently restored Hunterfly Road Houses, the
only surviving structures from the first free African-American community in
New York. A pathway passes through the 50-foot-wide portal-like entry of the
building, into an interpretive landscape and on to the historic houses. The
selection and use of materials reference African weaving patterns, including
the purple and green mottled slate of the building's base. The new structure
will include classrooms, a multipurpose performance and lecture hall,
gallery, café, library and information area.
