About This Gallery
ARTS BUILD NY is a growing catalogue of building projects at cultural institutions throughout New York City. A confluence of forces is creating a dramatic upsurge in new architecture for cultural institutions, including an increasing public interest in building design and city planning, a greater focus among organizations on attracting wider audiences; the city's economic prosperity and accompanying construction boom; as well as a City government that is more committed than ever before to cultural development.
All of the projects included in this gallery are public facilities completed since mid-2003 or currently in progress. Visitors may search this site by name of the commissioning organization, name of the architect, type of venue, borough or by image. Each project page provides information on the project location, project team, completion date, square footage and construction cost, as well as images and a short description. Because the City of New York has emerged as a major supporter of such projects, the amount of funding committed by the City to each project to date is also indicated.
This project emerges from the publication in 2003 by the Alliance for the Arts of the landmark study of the economic impact of investment in building projects at nonprofit cultural institutions Culture Builds New York, available for download here.
